Inspired by his father’s passion for filmmaking, Abdul Malik Abbott began his creative journey as a young artist, studying painting and illustration at New York City’s renowned LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, where he worked in oil painting and created pen-and-ink and charcoal illustrations, before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Film from the School of Visual Arts. His career began in the sound department, where he contributed to landmark productions including Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and Mo’ Better Blues. He went on to work on more than 500 commercials and music videos, two seasons of Chappelle’s Show, and established himself as one of the industry’s most accomplished music video editors, editing more than 300 videos. Abbott’s transition into directing marked a defining chapter in his career. He first gained recognition with the award-winning jazz music video People in Me for legendary vocalist Abbey Lincoln before directing the Platinum-selling, long-form music film Streets Is Watching, starring Jay-Z. The groundbreaking project reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts and helped redefine visual storytelling in hip-hop. Abbott also directed several of Jay-Z’s most iconic music videos, including the chart-topping Ain’t No... and Dead Presidents, establishing himself as one of the creative voices behind the visual identity of Roc-A-Fella Records during its formative years. Expanding into narrative filmmaking, Abbott directed the urban crime drama State Property, starring Beanie Sigel and Jay-Z. Following its theatrical release, the film became one of the nation’s top-selling home video releases, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard Home Video Sales chart and further cementing his reputation as a filmmaker capable of bridging music, cinema, and popular culture. After relocating to Los Angeles and joining the Directors Guild of America, Abbott broadened his creative focus to television, documentaries, and digital media. He has written, directed, shot, and edited numerous retrospective and documentary-style films honoring some of the industry's most influential African American filmmakers, including John Singleton, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Kasi Lemmons, Bill Duke, Neema Barnette, Michael Schultz, F. Gary Gray, Robert Townsend, and Reginald Hudlin. A respected leader within the directing community, Abbott has also served multiple terms as Co- Chair of the Directors Guild of America’s African American Steering Committee, helping champion diversity, mentorship, and professional development within the Guild. A lifelong musician as well as filmmaker, Abbott’s passion for music continues to shape his creative work. As co-founder, producer, and principal musician of the contemporary soul music project B.O.S.S, he produced and released the albums Tricky Kinda Love and Liquid Leather. Recording under the name DJ ABBY AB, he also released the solo album Balance Love Power, featuring original instrumental compositions and collaborations with an array of accomplished vocalists and songwriters. His award-winning short films Curse of War, The Audacity, Ties That Bind and Balance of Power further demonstrate his versatility as a storyteller, blending cinematic narratives with music, fashion, and social commentary. Most recently, Abbott completed producing, cinematography, and editing duties on a feature-length documentary chronicling the life and work of internationally acclaimed artist Betye Saar. He also continues to serve as producer, director, and lead editor for the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), overseeing the organization's prestigious awards shows, television specials, and original programming. Today, Abdul Malik Abbott continues to develop feature films, television projects, documentaries, and music-driven content while mentoring emerging filmmakers and creating work that reflects his enduring belief in the power of music, film, and storytelling to inspire, entertain, and preserve culture. A voting member of both the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Recording Academy, Abbott remains an active and influential voice across the film, television, and music industries, continuing to shape stories that resonate with audiences around the world. www.abdulmalikabbott.com
